This common activity is found everywhere. We sit in our cars on our way to work. We sit all day at the office. We sit down to eat. We sit to watch television. We are capable of sitting all day long. In fact, many of our socio-economic systems are set up around us sitting all day long.

But the fact of the matter is that sitting all day long is so unhealthy for us. While we are sitting for hours on end our muscles will burn less fat and blood flows more slowly allowing fatty acids to more easily clog the heart. When we are able to move more our spines expand and the soft discs are able to soak up more blood and nutrients. If we stay stagnant our backs are becoming inflexible as collagen hardens around tendons and ligaments. We see poor circulation and soft bones being a problem with people who sit for long periods of time. There are also correlations between sitting for long periods of time and cancer cell reproductions. The fact of the matter is that we have potential on our hands for some very serious health repercussions unless we address this issue.

When you are sitting at a desk for a long period of time making sure that you are sitting correctly. You should have lots of 90-degree angles. Your feet should be flat on the floor, your knees should be at 90 degrees and your back should be straight and not slouched over. Your arms should also be at 90 degrees and you should be looking directly forward at your computer screen, not up or down. If you are sitting make sure you are moving your legs around to get blood flow moving there. But most importantly – GET UP. New studies are showing that even 1 hour of moderate to intensive activity can fight back at the symptoms that come with prolonged sitting. Make sure you are taking the appropriate steps to live a healthy and full life.
