I give blood because of the benefits it provides. We all know of the importance of giving blood. Without it people would die because blood is necessary for certain medical interventions. Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood and more than 41,000 donations are needed every day according to the American Red Cross.

Benefit Number 1
Better heart health. Blood donors are 88% less likely to suffer a heart attack. You see the blood you give is replaced by new blood that is less sticky to the arterial walls, thus reducing plaque and thus fewer heart attacks.

Benefit Number 2
You get a mini health exam. Before giving blood, the following will checked: temperature, pulse, blood pressure and hemoglobin levels (add sometimes cholesterol). Your blood will be checked for 13 different tests for infectious diseases like HIV and West Nile Virus.

Benefit Number 3
Iron levels will stay balanced. When you donate blood you lose a quarter of a gram of iron, which will be replenished from the food you eat. This is good for your body as too much iron could be bad for your blood vessels.

Benefit Number 4
You may live longer. Psychological studies report that volunteers live longer lives, about 4 years longer than those who volunteered for themselves alone. Maybe it is better to give than to receive after all. It is estimated my blood donations have saved the lives of up to 21 people. Now that makes me feel good. What’s not to like about that?
